I believe it is safe to say that PALS loves to paint at this wonderful and peaceful farm. Thank you Jen and Peter for allowing us to be free on your beautiful property. Even the Alpacas and geese didn't mind us a bit. The weather was warm for this time of year, and we all enjoyed every minute we painted, and each others company. I hope we can go back again next year!

Bayard Cutting Arboretum Nov 1, 2011

This was a cold and blustery day. I almost wondered if I could stand the wind as Joan and I searched for the perfect spot to set up our gear. We wandered from the lake toward the mansion, when the sun came out and we felt the breeze stop as we were blocked by beautiful trees. Perfect!

Monterey, CA Old Fisherman's Wharf

While PALS painted on the east coast in NY, I was painting on the west coast

in California. I painted in Aptos, Capitola, Carmel, and Lake Tahoe, but my favorite location was Old Fisherman's Wharf in Monterey. My friends Priscilla and Durinda and I ended up lucking out and painting in the America Impressionist Society paint out. The weather was perfect and there were artists with easels as far as the eye could see. Another highlight was catching the AIS annual juried show at Mountainsong Galleries in Carmel. The paintings in that show were outstanding. My new love...California!

We had such a great time painting at the wonderful LaCortes Farmstand that we had to paint it twice!
Wonderful colors and flowers, fruit and Vegetables! Even Llamas. The weather looked a bit grey, but then cleared up right above our heads and it was a pleasure. Of course, the best thing of all are the wonderful

We enjoyed celebrating the wonder of plein air, after meeting up at Forge River Marina in Mastic NY. First we shared our memories and stories about September 11th. I think we collectively wanted to really appreciate our art and the beauty of the day and to live on in memory of all of the lost people on this 10th sad anniversary of 9-11. God bless everyone. Let this be a lesson to all of the artists out there, when the opportunity arises..."Paint don't Wait".
That may be my new motto. While heading out to Greenport with fellow artist/friend/Pal Chris Taylor we stumbled upon the most glorious Sunflowers. We quickly pulled the car over and took photos planning on bringing PALS there the following week. I couldn't wait to paint these spectacular Sunflowers with their heads held higher than any I have ever seen before. Every day I thought about this magnificent yellow garden with the barn in the background. I plotted and planned the view I would paint. I pondered will I paint in water color or oil. I counted the days....but I never counted on hurricane Irene!

Frank Melville Memorial Park, Setauket 8/9/11

It amazes me that I have never heard of this park ever before, and yet 2 people just told me about it in the same week (Thanks Muriel and Allie)! Well I loved it and I can't wait to go back again. It was quite an adventure finding though, and my journey involved at least 4 U-turns, but it was well worth the effort. I was surprised at how many PALS found there way, and I am sure there will be some wonderful paintings from this location.
When it was time to leave, thank goodness for Rose Ann, because I am not sure I would have found my way to my car on my own! Next time I will sprinkle some paint brushes to follow!

Lands End, Sayville 8/2/11

This was a sunny, hot day...we all searched for some shade. Sharon was creative with the use of her car doors, and most of us were inside the wedding gazebo, enjoying the piped in music and a beautiful view of the Great South Bay as well as some nice conversation. I love summer!

This was a beautiful location, enjoyed by all. Each way we looked was another painting. It was also one of the locations that was enjoyed by plein air painters the week before with the Gallery North Wetpaints Festival.

Squassux Landing 7/12/11

Today was a step back in time in Brookhaven Hamlet, NY. Squassux Landing is an old fashioned, natural marina, with little more than rickety docks and a huge collection of interesting boats - untouched by commercialism.
Most of the artists gathered by the gazebo for some shade, painting away on this very hot summer day.
I walked along the gravel road of this marina, and around the bend, much to my relief, was a mirage...shade from a tree! I settled there and set up my canvas and brushes. After awhile a wind blew in, yes, wind! So I looked around for something to weigh down my easel and I came up with this invention-in honor of my creative dad...a cooler for my water bottle and a weight at the same time.

Couldn't be a better morning...Happy Birthday Dad!

The Lavender Farm East Marion, NY 7/5/11

Loved this location! It was the perfect temperature for comfortable
painting on the North Fork of Long Island. The sun was shining and a light breeze was just enough to enjoy the lavender scented air.
We had a nice turn out of artists, and most of us painted the Lavender fields from under the shade trees.
We even shopped and my car has never smelled so good!

The highlight for me was the surprise turn out of young artists. They arrived and quickly set up their easels, in a style I have never seen before...two to an easel...now thats ingenuity at its best!...I mean, there's no need to waste the back of your easel!
Now that's what PALS is all about, sharing the love of art...good job moms!

Another beautiful PALS location..."a gem" with a painting everywhere you turn. We enjoyed painting, feeling one with nature, listening to the babbling brook. I even painted with a
twig that I found on the ground.
It was interesting to see such different artist interpretations of the bridge...enjoy the paintings by Ros, Marlene, and Sandra!

Rain and clouds were brewing in the sky, but it didn't stop many PALS from turning up at this favorite location on the south shore of Long Island. It felt more like an autumn day, and even a few (we could count them on 2 hands!) rain drops appeared. I didn't mind much, I thought they might add a bit of drama to my watercolor painting! Artists tend to go with the flow. Even a bit of duck poo on our shoes didn't bother us, since the location is just spectacular. The highlight for me was going inside, yes I said inside, a tree! I could live there happily!

PALS had a spectacular day at Flowerfield. Clear cerulean blue skies, beautiful reflective lake, flowers of course, huge trees, birds chirping, and most of all...peace. The only thing that seemed odd were the 2 plastic swans across the lake, under a tree. Rita and the other artists were busy

painting away, when after a while we looked up, and the swans came to life and jumped into the water! Thanks Flowerfield for allowing us to visit and paint your amazing location.

Smith's Point Beach

Tuesday morning, the most amazing Fog rolled in, so I wasn't sure what to expect at the PALS Smith's Point Beach location. All I could see were the side railings as I drove over the bridge, and when I found my way into the parking lot I could only see about 100 feet ahead of me. I parked and began to walk toward the beach and via cell phone, I met up with Laurie S. We enjoyed our morning on the beach, listening to the huge waves crashing loudly, watching birds fly by in flocks, and painting away. It was so relaxing. We even watched in amazement as 2 surfers swam into the waves until they were swallowed up by the fog. It was a wonderful morning, a great way to start the day....when I arrived home to an email with photos, I couldn't stop smiling...turns out, not far away down the beach, more PALS were sketching and painting on the other side of the fog!

PALS had a fantastic time at this beautiful and vibrant location. It was pouring rain outside, with thunder crackling in the distance, but inside we sketched and painted what felt like summer. It felt so hopeful painting amongst the colorful, abundant flowers. Thank you so much to the Vanderzalm family for making us feel so welcome!

Today was a spectacular weather day, finally! Perfect for PALS to start our 2011 Painting en Plein Air season. We had a wonderful turn out at Avalon Park in Stony Brook.
We enjoyed the beautiful lake, green trees, the protective swan, and many ducks, and even some tiny baby ducklings. It was great to see so many new faces, as well as PALS from last season. We had pastel, oil and watercolor artists, people taking photos and sketching and just enjoying each others conversations. Welcome everyone, and I hope to see you next week!

Spring is Springing!

Spring is officially here, crocus are poking their heads up, Daffodil greens look hopeful, and it's time for PALS to start planning for the months ahead.
For all of you who signed up so far, Thank-you. You should see your website link (if you sent one) posted on right side column of this website. I encourage everyone who visits this site to click on the links, and enjoy some wonderful artwork.

I find that being part of PALS is so much more than just painting or drawing. It's a reason to go outside, a reason to see and enjoy the beautiful landscapes of Long Island. For myself, it gives me that little push I need to be sure I paint every week, even if its just for an hour or two. 9:30 AM I will be at the Bellport Dock and Marina...Everyone is welcome!
I think we can pull our cars up by the sand and paint or sketch from the cars, or set up an easel and enjoy the brisk weather!

I will be there from 930 till 1030 for sure, so if any PALS artists that are going to be in he DEC 11th and 12th PALS show, would like to drop off their paintings to me at the Bellport dock location, feel free.

We enjoyed a wonderful morning of painting a view of Swan Lake...although it was a bit windy and getting a bit chilly. Most of us didn't even know there was such a wonderful lake at that location. We enjoyed ourselves and each others company so much, we didn't even stop for the "Earthquake"!

What started out as possibly a chilly morning when we arrived, turned into a glorious autumn day as soon as we set up to paint and had our faces in the sun down by the lake. I actually felt warm and toasty! We had lot's of friendly people walk by, with kind comments and showing a lot of interest in our paintings. Thanks everyone!

I will be lucky enough to be thinking about all of you while I am Plein Air painting in Tuscany,Italy this week. I will be in the Chianti Vineyards and wandering around Siena, Florence and some small villages. Islip Art Museum

I believe "in doing"...you can talk about things and ideas until you are blue in the face- but there is nothing like hands on experience ...I can tell you about a great recipe, or about anything at all, but like a recipe, until you actually taste it for real-it's only 1/2 the experience.

That's Plein Air to me- it's like a few hours in time that you are actually living inside of your own painting...you can hear the sounds, and smell the air, you feel the breeze, or the humidity, or rain drops. You look with your eyes, study every detail of what you see...you hold your brush and touch the soft paint and for a while you are one with your art...It makes me feel alive... that's Plein Air to me.

Meadow Farm

Many thanks to Jen Puleston and her family for welcoming PALS to their farm. We had a glorious day...a painting every direction we looked, and such a great turn out. The farm made us all feel peaceful and relaxed, as if we were somewhere else in time...The barn and property are beautiful, the huge wood pile ready for winter, the alpacas were as curious about us as we were about them. (They have the sweetest faces! ) The ducks were having a grand old time jumping in and out of the creek... the sun was perfect and the breeze was just enough to blow any of our daily worries away!

Follow the map, and once you are on S.Country Rd (coming from Bellport Village)make a right into Beaverdam Rd...then a right onto Meadow Lane. At the end make a left into the barn parking area...

Another great day of Plein Air Painting....or in my case, Plein Air Talking! It was great catching up with everyone...Joan just got back from Venice and I really enjoyed all of her postcard paintings...Larry arrived on his bike with all of his art gear, looking at least 20 years younger then he is, a curious neighbor, Reva, even came out to see what we were all up to and she ended up painting with all of us....so don't be shy...come join us at our next location...check back Monday to see where we are going!

Meadow Croft Estate

What a glorious location Meadow Croft is! A painters paradise. We had another wonderful turn out of amazing artists and friends. I am quite sure we could have had an art sale right there on the wrap around porch! I always find it interesting how artists can look at the same subject and interpret it so differently from each other, each with their own style. I left there very impressed.

Watch Hill Ferry

I looked around at the sea of artists, at the Watch Hill Ferry location, sketching, and painting the boats and their reflections, capturing the colorful umbrellas across the river.

I noticed 2 artists brought their grandaughters...Ilene with Katlyn, and Rita with Jamie from Texas. It brought me back to a memory of my grandma coming to visit us for a week when I was about 10 years old. We didn't seem to connect until that last day. As I sat in a chair, reading a book, I looked up to see her drawing. I went to look at what she was doing, and to my surprise, she had sketched a picture of me. I was amazed, I didn't know I could have such an interesting grandma. I sat next to her and we drew, and we bonded, side by side for hours, hardly speaking , with pencils in hand.

Little did I know what a huge, positive impact that day would end up being on my life.

So, as I looked over and saw Jamie and her Grandma with their easels, painting a beautiful pastel memory, her 1st Plein Air ever, I knew it was a very important day.

Suffolk County Farm

Suffolk County Farm is a beautiful location with a painting everywhere you turn. I really enjoyed the north wind...lightly manure scented, but it made me feel alive, after all a breeze is a breeze! After setting up, and about an hour into my painting of a tractor, I heard a motor start, and I looked up and my focal point was driving away down the pebbled lane,pulling a red wagon full of happy children. ...What a great way to spend a summer morning!

Dunton Avenue Beach

Dunton Avenue Beach was like walking into a painting. Especially with the water lapping just a few feet away.
What started out as a stormy looking sky, turned into a peaceful and serene morning with a great turn out.
Much needed, from what I could tell, since 2 of the Long Island artists hadn't been to a beach in 10 years! (happy to help you banish that record!)
Another PAL was relaxing before her envious journey to Venice,Italy.(if only we could "really" fit in her suitcase!)
What a fantastic way to spend the morning, and yes, the little red boat was there.

It was wonderful to see such a great turnout at the gorgeous
Peconic River Herb Farm, even though the thermometer hit 89 degrees,
or was it 100?, during the peak of our NY heatwave!
We learned so many new things...
1. Watercolors can melt, as well as oils, and people!
2. We can sweat more by moving a brush then by boxing in the gym.
3. Its always wonderful spending a few hours with talented people!
4. We are not afraid of the heat!
